Wisconsin Ties Harvard for Educating Most CEOs
The University of Wisconsin-Madison and the School of Business have recently received terrific news coverage thanks to story in the September issue of Bloomberg Markets magazine.
Here are some highlights from the Bloomberg story:
- Wisconsin and Harvard tied for first place in the number of graduates who are CEOs of S&P 500 companies (15 total for each school).
- While Wisconsin has a much larger undergrad program than Harvard, we're also turning out more CEOs than several similarly sized universities including University of Texas, University of Michigan and Ohio State.
- Wisconsin ranks 8th for the number of MBA alumni who are CEOs of S&P 500 companies—ahead of Tuck, University of Michigan, and many other top-ranked programs. This is especially noteworthy considering the relatively smaller size of our program.
- In the 12 months ended June 30, stocks of companies led by Wisconsin grads returned 27.4 percent—a little more than 2 percent better than companies led by Harvard grads.
As a follow up to the story, Bloomberg Radio aired a segment (listen to the segment with RealPlayer) on August 5, featuring the article's author, Liz Willen, and Dean Michael M. Knetter. An interview was also conducted on Wisconsin Public Radio (listen to the interview with RealPlayer).

In addition to the Bloomberg magazine article, the Wisconsin State Journal and the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel followed up with stories on the subject. The story also received a brief mention in the Boston Herald.
It's definitely news worth spreading!
