Carroll E. Ebert, BBA '49, retired chief executive officer of Carson Pirie Scott & Co., died May 14, in Naperville, Ill. Ebert received the Distinguished Business Alumnus award from the School of Business in 1988 and served on the school's Board of Visitors from 1984 to 1988. Ebert was the leader of one of Chicago's largest department stores and oversaw the addition of several new Carson Pirie Scott stores. He received a bachelor's degree in accounting from the School of Business. After college he worked for three years as an auditor for Bendix Corp. in South Bend, Ind. He later worked for retailers in Milwaukee before accepting a position with Chicago-based accounting firm Touche Ross, where he specialized in retail auditing and later was treasurer for a Wieboldt's department store in Chicago. Ebert joined Carson Pirie Scott in 1967 as the company's vice president of finance. He eventually became its president and chief executive officer, the position he held when he retired in 1983. Ebert was a Navy veteran of World War II and was active in volunteer and philanthropic activities, including Chicago Uptown Ministry, Lutheran Child and Family Services, United Way and other civic organizations.
