The Certificate in Business (CIB) Program

The Certificate in Business (CIB) program provides non-business students the opportunity to earn a concentration in a clearly defined academic program in business. Rules, policies, and procedures are given below.

Students may receive academic advising for the CIB from the Undergraduate Academic Services Office (UAS) in the School of Business. Advisors in the UAS see students by appointment. To schedule an appointment and meet with an advisor, please contact the UAS via phone: 608.262.0471, or in person: room 2020 Grainger Hall.

Applying

Availability

The CIB application is available on the UAS web site during the first four weeks of the fall and spring semesters. Please click on HERE to access the Certificate in Business Application.

Deadline

Generally, the application is available a day or two before the first day of classes, and the application deadline is the fourth Friday of classes at 4:30 PM. (This deadline is the same as the University deadline for pass/fail and can be readily found on the Office of the Registrar’s Deadlines At A Glance web page.)

Re-applying

Students who are denied admission to the CIB are welcome and encouraged to re-apply the following semester, provided they meet the minimum requirements for applying. Students may re-apply as many times as they wish, including the semester a student plans to graduate.

Transfer students must complete a minimum of 12 graded credits at UW-Madison.

Students enrolled in a UW-Madison sponsored study abroad program are eligible for applying.

Undergraduate, degree-seeking student

All undergraduate students are eligible to apply except those students already admitted to the School of Business BBA degree program.

Admissions

Admission Notification

The UAS notifies students via email of the application decision. Normally, decision letters are emailed to students within 2-4 weeks after the application deadline (6th-8th weeks of classes).

Students must have their UW-Madison email account (@wisc.edu) activated to be eligible to apply to the CIB program.

Admission Elgibility

Students that do not meet the minimum criteria for applying are ineligible for admission. Therefore, the CIB application will not allow students to apply without meeting the minimum application requirements.

Admission for eligible students is based solely on cumulative UW-Madison GPA. No other factors are taken into consideration for admission, and all admission decisions are final. There is no appeal process for denied students.

Admission Criteria

The UAS determines admissibility for eligible students from the UW-Madison student record at the time of the application deadline. Any changes to a student’s record after the application deadline, including changes in credits, grades, etc., will not be considered.

Re-admission

Students admitted to the CIB program who are re-entering UW-Madison after any kind of leave of absence (study abroad, personal reasons, etc.) to compete their undergraduate degree do not need to re-apply to the CIB program. Students are automatically enrolled into the CIB program upon re-entry to UW-Madison. However, it is the student’s responsibility to verify that the CIB has been re-declared and appears on the student’s record. If re-entry students do not wish to complete the CIB program, they must complete a CIB Cancellation form.

Certificate in Business Admission Process

CIB enrollment is capped at 200 students.

1. Determine the number of available spaces. (This is the number of students who have completed all CIB requirements or have withdrawn from the CIB program at the end of the previous semester.)

2. Determine all students eligible for admission.

  • Junior standing
  • Enrolled Undergraduate student
  • 12 GPA credits
  • 2.75 or higher cumulative GPA

3. Rank eligible students by descending GPA.

4. Admit highest GPAs equal to the number of available spaces.

Business courses

Non-business students may enroll for most Business courses whether or not they have been admitted to the CIB program. However, non-business students must meet the pre-requisites listed for Business courses and must wait until the open enrollment date to enroll. The open enrollment date can be found at the top of the page of the Department Course Listing page in the Timetable.

Priority Enrollment for Business Courses

Admitted students to the CIB program will have priority enrollment for the four CIB Core courses. Priority Enrollment does not guarantee students a seat in the course; however, it does allow students to enroll at their earliest enrollment date.

CIB students do not receive priority enrollment for the two breadth courses. CIB students must wait until the open enrollment date for business courses to enroll. The open enrollment date can be found at the top of the page of the Department Course Listing page in the Timetable.

Prospective CIB students, including those not admitted must wait until the open enrollment date to enroll for Business courses. The open enrollment date can be found at the top of the page of the Department Course Listing page in the Timetable.

Enrollment Errors

Many non-business students encounter problems when trying to enroll for Business courses. Students may not be able to enroll for Business courses because of some type of error. Below are common reasons students encounter when enrolling for business courses and ways to troubleshoot the problems.

Error Description

Reason/Action

HOLDS: You have a hold on your record. The hold on your record must be removed before this transaction can be processed.

A department on the UW-Madison campus has placed a hold on your record preventing your enrolling or updating your course enrollment. Go to your my UW-Madison account under the Student Record tab for who to contact for more information about the hold.

PERMISSION: Class Requires Permission to Enroll, Class not Added. Department or Instructor Consent is needed to enroll in the class.

Must have permission to enroll from the instructor and respective department. If within the add deadline, student should complete a Business Course Authorization form.

REQUISITES: Requisites Not Met for Class, Not Enrolled. Requirements have not been met to enroll in the specified class. Consult prerequisites and footnotes before contacting the department offering the class.

There are many different reasons for this error. Some common reasons include

  • junior standing – for almost all business courses, students must have junior standing to enroll. Junior standing is 54+ credits.
  • business classification – almost all business courses are restricted to students admitted to the School of Business until the open enrollment date. The open enrollment date is listed in the Timetable. (Gen Bus 300, Gen Bus 450, and some selective upper level business courses are not available to non-business students at any time.)
  • pre-requisites – have not completed the pre-requisite course(s) required to enroll for the course

Completion/Withdrawal

Timely Completion

Students admitted to the CIB program must complete the CIB requirements prior to or concurrently with their degree requirements. Students who have graduated and have not completed all CIB requirements will be withdrawn from the program. For example, a student graduating in May 2005 may not complete any remaining CIB requirements during the summer 2005 semester or thereafter.

Permanent Leave of Absence/Transfer Out of UW-Madison

Students admitted to the CIB program who will not be continuing their education at UW-Madison need to withdraw from the CIB program by completing a CIB Cancellation form.

Re-entry/Re-admission

Students admitted to the CIB program who are re-entering UW-Madison after any kind of leave of absence (study abroad, personal reasons, etc.) to complete their undergraduate degree do not need to re-apply to the CIB program.

Withdrawal

Students admitted to the CIB may withdraw themselves from the program by completing and submitting a CIB Cancellation form. If students know they will not complete all CIB requirements, withdrawal from the program as soon as possible is requested. This will make your space available to future students applying to the CIB.

CIB Award/Notation

Upon successful completion of all CIB requirements prior to or concurrently with degree requirements, students will have “Awarded Certificate in Business” notated on official transcripts for the semester in which the last CIB requirements are completed. Students do not receive a separate paper certificate, nor is the certificate notated on a diploma.
