FAQ - Career Planning/Placement
Does the School of Business provide job search assistance?
The Business Career Center (BCC), located at 3290 Grainger Hall, is your one-stop comprehensive career services center. The BCC provides career development programming, advising, and placement assistance to undergraduate business students and students in the five-year professional accounting program. Career planning is an ongoing process, and we are committed to helping you achieve your immediate career goals and plan for the future. Visit the BCC web site for detailed information on our services.
I'm not sure which area of business I want to go into. What can the BCC do to guide me?
The BCC sponsors a variety of events throughout the academic year
called the Business
Basics Seminar Series. Attending these seminars is an excellent
way to explore career options in specific business fields. Seminar
topics range from resume preparation to successful case
interviewing.
For assistance in choosing a major area of study, please refer to
the BizCAREERS Guide
which provides specific resources for your major or field of
interest. Students may always schedule an appointment with a
BCC advisor to
discuss your major and career goals.
When should I begin my career search?
Immediately! Start working on your resume and cover letter and begin to research the industries and companies which interest you. The BCC is available to assist prospective business school students (freshmen and sophomores) and current business students with the career-search process. The BCC offers a variety of services that are free of charge to these students and include Advising Appointments; Resume and Cover Letter Drop-Off Service; Sample Resumes, Letters, and Interview Preparation Guides; CareerLeader-College Self Assessment Tool; BuckyNet; On-Campus Recruiting; WebResume Book; BizCareers Guide; Alumni Directory; Salary and Placement Statistics; weekly emails; and access to BCC Tech Central.
Can the BCC help me create a resume and cover letter?
The BCC has made resume and cover letter writing very easy for students through the availability of resume and cover letter writing seminars, advising sessions, sample resume and cover letter guides and the resume and cover letter drop-off service. We also offer a new service called OptimalResume which assists students in the creation and formatting of an initial resume. Please register on BuckyNet to access this new service! More information on all of these services may be viewed on the BCC Student Homepage.
What companies recruit UW-Madison business students?
Last year, nearly 350 employers conducted on-campus interviews for School of Business undergraduate students and students in our five-year professional program in accounting. In addition, 135 employer presentations were coordinated by the BCC, and over 5,000 interviews took place on-campus. Register on BuckyNet for access to a complete list of employer visits and events.
What percentage of business undergraduates seeking employment was placed and what were their starting salaries?
Salary statistics are updated monthly on the BCC’s Web site and the Year in Review provides final salary and placement data for the current and previous academic years.
