Academic Support Resources
There are a number of academic support services available to students on the UW-Madison campus. Many of these services are free to students as part of your tuition. Below are some of the more common services you might use as a student here, but this is certainly not an exhaustive list. If you do not see the right service for you, or if you aren't sure where to begin, your academic advisor can be a good place to start.
- Business Learning Center
- Business Library
- Greater University Tutoring Service
- Math Tutorial Program and Math Lab
- McBurney Disability Resource Center
- TRIO Student Support Services
- Writing Center
The Business Learning Center:
The primary mission of the Business Learning Center (BLC) is to help students excel by providing ancillary academic support in quantitatively based business-related courses (including Econ 101, Econ 102 and Accounting 100). At the BLC, students work in small groups to help reinforce their understanding of the materials presented in lectures. During Learning Center sessions we explore concepts in greater depth, address students' questions, and conduct additional exercises. We help students to reinforce their understanding of the materials presented in the lectures. We discuss the homework and provide additional exercises to be worked in class. We prepare students for exams by offering practice exams and review sessions.
IT'S FREE FOR YOU! All it will cost you is some time and some planning. In return, you have the opportunity to excel! Stop in the Business Learning Center at 2240 Grainger Hall and complete a short form that will help to place you in a session that is convenient for your schedule. Assignments will be made on space availability.
School of Business Library:
The mission of the Business Library is to support the teaching and research activities of the students, faculty and staff of the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Business Library can be found in 2200 Grainger Hall and on the web at http://business.library.wisc.edu
Library staff provide email research assistance via AskBusiness@library.wisc.edu. They also provide instant messaging (chat) research assistance via Libraries Live Help. Click on the Libraries Live Help button on the library web pages.
Greater University Tutoring Service:
GUTS Tutorial, or the Greater University Tutoring Service, is a volunteer tutoring organization that provides free tutoring to all students attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Tutoring is available to all students who wish to improve their grades, study habits, and conversational English.
The Academic Match Program, for students who want consistent, weekly help with a course; Study Skills Counseling from GUTS's Study Skills staff; Drop-In Tutoring for students who have immediate, short-term tutoring needs; Conversational English help for international students who wish to improve their English fluency; and an Exam File containing past math, statistics, chemistry, and physics exams.
Math Tutorial Program and Math Lab:
The Math Tutorial Program and the Math Lab provide both structured and drop-in services for students looking for support in their Math courses. Both services are free to students. See their websites for more information. In addition to these programs, there are other math-related resources that can be found on the "Getting Help In Your Math Class" page.
McBurney Disability Resource Center:
The McBurney Center's mission is to assist in creating an accessible university community where students with disabilities have an equal opportunity to fully participate in all aspects of the educational environment. We cooperate through partnerships with students, faculty, and staff to promote students' independence and to ensure recognition of their abilities, not disabilities.
The McBurney Center provides direct support services to students with disabilities, including but not limited to: advocacy, adapted materials, alternative testing, counseling, interpreting, notetaking, and taped texts. They also serve as an information and referral service on disability issues and provide current and accurate information in disability products, programs, and services to all inquiring customers.
They serve UW-Madison students with physical, learning, sensory or psychological disabilities substantially affecting a major life activity (e.g., walking, communicating, seeing, or breathing). Many clients have hidden disabilities such as diabetes, arthritis, HIV/AIDS, depression, learning disabilities, or other health impairments.
TRIO Student Support Services:
The
TRIO Student Support Services program is a federally funded program
designed to provide academic and ancillary support to low-income
students, first generation college students, and students with
disabilities.
TRIO is a campus-wide program open to students from various disciplines.
We work with over 250 students per year. Our mission is to provide a
supportive learning community which fosters an equal opportunity for
success in higher education.
TRIO services are available to our students from freshmen year until
graduation. Students are encouraged to start working with us as soon as
they apply for admissions to the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
However, we always welcome the opportunity to work with continuing UW
students throughout the academic year.
The Writing Center:
The Writing Center's programs are staffed by six professional writing instructors, 47 doctoral teaching assistants in composition and rhetoric and from literary studies, and 55 undergraduate Writing Fellows. All tutors in Writing Center programs are highly trained, expert readers and are qualified to offer help with writing in all disciplines and at all levels.
Whether you need help proofreading a paper or preparing for an essay exam, the Writing Center can help you improve your writing. See their website for the wide range of services available.
