Career Resources

Three unique career resources are available to UW students.

  1. The Real Estate Club is a student run organization that undertakes a number of career oriented activities. Club meetings and the biannual field trips provide important networking opportunities, with a wide range of visiting speakers. Recent speakers have included Claude Ballard, Randy Rowe and Sally Gordon. The Club produces and distributes a resume book to over 250 industry leaders.

  2. The School of Business has an active Business Career Center, under the direction of Steve Schroeder. The Center works closely with faculty, the Real Estate Club, and the alumni network to ensure each student receives maximum exposure in the marketplace.

  3. The Wisconsin Real Estate Alumni Association is a source of employment information and opportunity, not only upon graduation, but throughout one's career. WREAA employs an employment coordinator who solicits and collates job information.

Many students take advantage of these resources to undertake internships while in the program. Internships are strongly encouraged. Recent company requests for our students include Equity Residential, CitiBank, Allianz, American Family, CUNA Mutual, Southwest Mutual, Institute of Real Estate Management, Sanwa Business Credit, Heitman Financial, Realty Consultants, HUD, McDonald’s, Marcus, and Towel Real Estate Co.

In recent years the University of Wisconsin has placed students in every sub-field of real estate, including development, finance and investment, asset management, appraisal and valuation.

Wisconsin's placement is traditionally strong in the Midwest, placing a number of students in Chicago, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and other heartland cities. But significant numbers of students have also taken positions on Wall Street, in San Francisco, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Boston, Denver, Dallas, and Washington, DC.

Students have also taken positions overseas. Recent graduates work in cities like London, Tokyo, Taipei, Jakarta, and Hamburg.

Among over 100 companies that have recruited recently are J.P. Morgan, McDonald's, Disney, Ellwood, LaSalle Partners, Autodesk, Cohen Financial, MGIC Risk Management, Miglin-Beitler, Inc., National Equity Fund, Prudential Corporate Real Estate Advisors, Adobe Systems, Fannie Mae, Price Waterhouse, Trammell Crow, CB Commercial, Cushman, Wakefield, AC Nielsen, CIGNA, KPMG Peat Marwick, Merk, Microsoft, Oracle, The Principal Financial Group, Sears, Bank of Montreal, CitiCorp, Coopers & Lybrand, Grubb & Ellis, Hammes Company, Heitman Financial, MCI, Nomura Asset Capital, and Simon DeBartolo Group.

Because UW offers a full program, students are not "locked in" to a single aspect of real estate. Particularly in the MS program, each student receives a broad education in every significant aspect of real estate -- the legal and urban economic frameworks for real estate, valuation, finance, development, and investment analysis. Each student then chooses two areas to pursue in greater depth.
