Highlights
Risk Management students from Wisconsin have a history of winning prestigious national competitions. In recent years, Wisconsin students have received both Spencer Scholarships and the Anita Benedetti Awards from the National Risk and Insurance Management Society. They have received nationally competitive scholarships from the Angus Robinson, Jr. Memorial Scholarship, Association of Professional Insurance Women and the Public Risk and Insurance Management Association.
In addition to competitive national scholarships, our Risk Management and Insurance program benefits from generous alumni and other contributions, which are used to fund project assistantships for many of our MBAs. These assistantships offer tuition remission, healthcare and a small stipend. More importantly, they allow students the opportunity to work on interesting projects while paying for their education.
Risk Management and Insurance students have had 100 percent placement in summer internships each of the past four years.
Recent graduates have been placed with Marsh, Inc., AON Risk Services, Liberty Mutual, Benfield, Tillinghast and many other organizations. Employers are enthused about the solid grounding our students have in all dimensions of risk management and insurance—including recent innovations in sustainability risk management, enterprise risk management and risk financing techniques.
Hands-on experience is an important aspect of the program. Numerous courses require projects associated with actual firms experiencing risk management needs. The most notable example is the risk management seminar in which teams of students undertake “consulting” projects. Recent examples include:
- Evaluating overall risks for a large assisted-living facility providing advice regarding its insurance coverage, loss control techniques and other important risk management endeavors
- Working with American Family Insurance Company’s risk manager to evaluate the insurer’s risk-management process
- Conducting a risk-management audit for Lands’ End, including analyzing and efficiently reducing risks associated with exposure to loss from e-commerce, including possible negative implications for the organization’s reputation
- Conducting a complete risk management and employee benefits audit for the East Madison Community Center, resulting in program improvements and insurance cost savings
- Evaluating the UW-Madison
student health insurance program and recommending improvements and modifications
Risk Management faculty are leaders in their fields, widely published in academic journals and serve on a variety of top advisory panels. They are also noted as superb teachers, receiving both school and university-wide recognition for excellence in instruction.
