While abroad

This page is a source of information for students who are currently studying overseas on a UW-Madison School of Business program. When noted with a icon, the link is to an Adobe Acrobat document and you will need the free Acrobat viewer to read it.

Double-check course equivalencies

Before your classes begin, verify the UW equivalents of the courses you plan to take on the course equivalency database.  If a course has not yet been equated, send the syllabus to the International Programs Project Assistant via email (internationaladvisor@bus.wisc.edu) or fax (608.263.0477).  International Programs will send the syllabus to the appropriate department, and will email all participants once the equivalency has been established (It usually takes a minimum of two weeks for a course to be equated).

Verify the UW credits by checking the grade and credit conversion table.

Report your classes to UW

Email a list of the courses you will take to the International Programs Project Assistant. Include the host university's course number and course title.

Your transcript

Your host university will send a transcript to UW's International Programs after your program ends. International Programs will report all grades to the UW Registrar's office. Check the grade and credit conversion table between your host university and UW.

Even if the class does not meet a UW requirement and you take it for personal fulfillment, International Programs will report the grade to UW. Consider exercising the pass/fail privilege for such classes.

Pass/fail privilege

Pass/Fail Policy (effective for all business students beginning Fall of 2007)

Undergraduate business students who are in good academic standing may take only one (1) course as pass/fail per semester including the summer session.

A maximum of twelve (12) total credits may be completed as pass/fail to count towards completion of the 120 degree credits required for the BBA.  The following courses cannot be taken pass/fail:

  • all business courses including those designated as "meets with" and "cross-listed"
  • any requirement for the Business major or degree, including, but not limited to, pre-business and liberal studies requirements

Review pass/fail privilege guidelines if you are considering exercising this option. Do not use the UPO form: see below.

Not all major departments allow their students to take pass/fail courses.  You MUST check with your academic advisor before you take a course pass/fail. No pass/fail course may fulfill any degree requirement or breadth requirement.

You must fax this form to International Programs (not Undergraduate Programs) at 608.263.0477 attn: International Programs during the first 1/4 of the host university's term (Deadlines on the Madison campus do not apply).

Graduate students may not take courses pass/fail.

Students who are taking finance classes abroad are reminded that UW's Finance department expects that you meet UW pre-requisites in order to comprehend better, to get full benefit from your finance classes and to prepare for future UW finance courses.
