Paris: ESCP-EAP and Sorbonne

Fall: Mid September - Late December

Spring: Late January - Late May

Summer: June 2 - July 11, 2008

Undergraduate and Graduate Exchange

Part of the Grandes Ecoles system, an elite group of management and engineering schools, ESCP-EAP is considered a leading school of management in France and is among the top business schools in Europe. Founded in 1819, ESCP-EAP is also the oldest business school in France. The recently renovated campus is located in the heart of Paris on Avenue de la République. The ESCP-EAP's weekend trips, student organizations and school-wide parties provide opportunity for French interaction. ESCP-EAP was recently ranked the Number 2 School of Management in Europe by the FT Business Education rankings.

UW offers two programs in Paris: the 'Business' program allows students to take business courses at the ESCP-EAP. Students who prefer to learn or improve their French language may opt for the 'Language and Business' program.  Participants attend one of 12 levels of French grammar classes at the Sorbonne, located in the Latin Quarter, in addition to business courses.  The Sorbonne's prestige is matched by few educational institutions. First offered in 1919, these courses attract students from around the world.

Paris' reputation precedes itself: the Eiffel Tower, the Cathedral of Notre-Dame and the Louvre's Mona Lisa are mainstays in the constantly evolving City of Lights. Paris is the center for the changing French political landscape and economy.

Language requirement and courses

Courses are taught in English and French. Even if you plan to take all courses in English, one to two semesters of French prior to departure is strongly recommended. English courses can fill up or be cancelled. Courses taught at the ESCP-EAP are upper-level business courses.  Therefore, it is recommended that you have taken Finance 300, MHR 300 or Marketing 300 prior to departure.  Receive UW residence credits and grades.

The semester begins with a compulsory, 1-credit seminar titled 'European Integration and Management,' which is taught in English during the ESCP-EAP's orientation week. This will add one credit to your transcript.

Business program students will attend courses at the ESCP-EAP, generally worth 3 UW credits. As soon as new course lists are available we will provide a link.

Language and business students will attend two to four business courses at the ESCP-EAP as well as French grammar courses at the Sorbonne.  French classes at the Sorbonne may have inconvenient scheduling. Check with ACCENT Paris each semester. Courses consist of long class sessions plus periodic language labs.  Receive credit for two UW courses depending upon your previous coursework.  Each course is worth 4 UW credits: French 101, 102, 203, 204, 227, 228, 311, 312 and 590 or 699 (repeatable). For Business French courses at UW-Madison before you go or after your return see link at the bottom of the page.

This list is subject to change.  Several business courses have not yet been equated; see International Programs for additional courses.  Graduate-level courses are only offered during fall semester; contact International Programs for course offerings.   Due to circumstances beyond our control such as enrollment limitations, time conflicts and course cancellations, International Programs cannot guarantee that participants will be admitted to their first choice of courses.
