International Programs Policy Guidelines

General Information

Policies set forth by the UW-System Administration, the UW-Madison and the Business School's International Programs office guide the administration, planning and program development of all our study abroad programs. These policies and guidelines were established primarily for the protection and safety of our study abroad participants. For these reasons, we expect study abroad participants to read, understand and adhere to the policies outlined below.

UW-Madison Policy Limitations on the Safety and Welfare of Participants:

International Programs will provide extensive information for program participants. However, this office:

  • Cannot guarantee or assure the safety of participants or eliminate all risks from the study abroad environments.

  • Cannot monitor or control all of the daily personal decisions, choices, and activities of individual participants.

  • Cannot assure that U.S. standards of due process apply in overseas legal proceedings or provide or pay for legal representation for participants.

  • Cannot assume responsibility for the actions of persons not employed or otherwise engaged by the program sponsor for events that are not part of the program or that are beyond the control of the sponsor, or for situations that may arise due to the failure of a participant to disclose pertinent information.

  • Cannot assure that home-country cultural values and norms will apply in the host country.

FERPA

The U.S. government's Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) requires that UW-Madison keep student academic records confidential.

Students have the right to inspect and review most educational records maintained about them by the UW-Madison and, in many cases, decide if a third person can obtain information from them. Students may challenge information in their records that they believe to be inaccurate, misleading, or inappropriate. The International Programs staff cannot discuss various aspects of a student's participation unless the student has given us permission in writing. As a rule, we do not ask for written permission.

Additional information on the level of access to student records can be found on the UW-Madison Registrar's Office website, http://registrar.wisc.edu/faq/parent_faq.php and http://registrar.wisc.edu/ferpa/student_ferpa.php.
