Financial Aid

Apply for Financial Aid through UW-Madison's Office of Student Financial Aid, not the School of Business.  Federal and state financial aid includes loans and grants.

Students who currently receive financial aid or scholarships from UW-Madison will continue to receive funding while abroad.  If you do not receive financial aid now, we encourage you to apply if you anticipate that your expenses abroad will be higher than Madison expenses.

Start the process of applying for financial aid as early as a year prior to your time abroad.  Follow the steps outlined below by the Office of Student Financial Aid (OFSA) to assure that the aid application process goes smoothly.

  • Apply for financial aid using the same process as if you were staying on the Madison campus.  This involves considerable paperwork!
  • Timing is important!  Apply early and complete your application with OSFA as soon as possible.
  • After you been accepted to a study abroad program, the School of Business will notify the registrar and OSFA. (April 15/November 15)
  • OSFA will use the study abroad cost estimate provided by the School of Business to determine the amount of your award.
  • Be aware of pitfalls.  Federal and state funding is limited.  To take advantage of study abroad you may need to work more hours, save money and ask your family for financial assistance.
  • Summer participants are not eligible to receive aid unless the program exceeds three weeks or you will attend classes in Madison in addition to studying abroad.

Apply for financial aid online.
