Barcelona: Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE)
CIEE Barcelona Business and Culture
Fall: Mid-August - Late December
Spring: Early January - Early May
Undergraduate Affiliated Program
The Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) study center in Barcelona offers students the chance to experience study abroad in Spain with little or no Spanish fluency. The host institution Escola Superior de Comerç Internacional (ESCI) was created in 1993 by the Catalan government as the business school for Universitat Pompeu Fabra, although they are considerred separately now. Its 300 students focus on International Business.
Barcelona is a Mediterranean city of history and culture in the Catalan region of Spain with a tradition of initiative, hard work, and creativity. The innovations of modern times have constructed an utterly unique city with a personality that is all its own. The official languages are Catalan and Castilian Spanish.
The CIEE program includes organized cultural activities such as museums, cathedrals, and the port, company visits, local excursions to places such as Girona, Monserrat, Ampurias, and Tarragona, and field trips to locations such as Madrid, Andalusia, or Spain's northern coast.
Language requirement and courses
Courses are taught in English with additional courses in Spanish for students with sufficient fluency. Receive UW residence credits and grades. Starting fall 2007, a 4 credit Spanish language course beginning before the regular semester and continuing through the semester is required. Students receive credit for the next Spanish course in the language sequence. Students also take one culture course and choose 3 business courses. Students with upper level language skills are to take courses in Spanish.
This is a new program and we are currently getting courses equated. We will update this site as information becomes available. Course offerings are available on the CIEE website.
