Intersession Study Tour 2004 
London, the French Riviera and Barcelona
 

May 17 -June 3, 2004.  Leave directly after finals and return in time for a summer internship!

This 3-credit intersession course includes travel to London, the French Riviera, and Barcelona to meet with Real Estate professionals to get a hands-on, first-person view of major real estate projects and trends. 

Tentative course events and highlights include:

  • Leading architect's presentation on the changing London skyline
  • Overview of European political economy and financial systems in Europe
  • Goldman Sachs presentation on publicly traded property company ratings
  • Buyout of Canary Wharf
  • Tour of major urban redevelopment projects in London
  • Investment trends across Europe
  • Sophia Antipolis - an emerging technology center near Nice (the "Silicon Valley" of Europe?)
  • Luxury residential condo/hotel investment in Monaco
  • Urban redevelopment projects in Marseilles and Barcelona
  • Many other events and tours

The course is limited to about 12 - 15 students and there are a few slots remaining. (Although targeted toward graduate students, undergraduates will be accepted on a case by case basis.) The application process is underway and only a few slots remain, so don't delay.

Course content

Participation in this tour includes enrollment in a three-credit contemporary topics course.  Undergraduates enroll in either International Business 365 or Real Estate 365.  Graduate students enroll in either International Business 765 or Real Estate 765. Pay no tuition, just the travel costs.

Tour activities include pre-departure orientation meetings, lectures at overseas venues, visits to various business enterprises and properties and additional group participation exercises. A paper on a specific aspect of current business and real estate market conditions will be required, due at the end of the 3-week intersession after returning from the tour.  Grades are based on full participation in all tour activities and requirements. 

Prerequisites 

The course is targeted toward graduate students in Real Estate, but undergraduate applicants may be admitted, space allowing, with instructor's consent.

Cost: Between $2,000 and $2,500

Exact cost will be determined by hotel rates in spring. The program fee includes:

  • Ground transportation costs within Europe
  • Entry fees to all scheduled events 
  • Hotel accommodations

The program fee does not include:

  • Airfare (estimated at $700)
  • Meals (other than those included with hotels or provided as part of scheduled events)
  • Individual entertainment and miscellaneous expenses. 

If you currently receive financial aid, you may apply the aid to your program abroad if you return to take summer classes in Madison. 

Student Financial Services (SFS) recommends that you contact them as early as a year in advance to complete the necessary paperwork.  International Programs notifies SFS of your participation in the program and provides them with an estimated budget for your time abroad. SFS may adjust the amount of aid for the term that you are abroad based on the estimated budget.

Applications and a $400 deposit are due as soon as possible. Full fees are due Monday, March 29. These should be submitted to Kay Henes, Room 5262 Grainger Hall.
