August 1, 2009

Accounting major Gwen Jorgensen, one of the most decorated runners at Wisconsin, has received the 2009 Medal of Honor from the Big Ten. The award is presented annually at each Big Ten institution to a male and female student-athlete in the graduating class for demonstrated proficiency in scholarship and athletics. Basketball player Joe Krabbenhoft, a history major, was the other Wisconsin recipient.

Jorgensen is a former Badger swimmer who turned to track and cross country as a sophomore. The Waukesha native was the Big Ten indoor champion in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters this year. In cross country, Jorgensen earned All-American honors in 2008 and took home All-Big Ten and All-Region honors as a senior.

In the classroom, Jorgensen has fared even better, earning Academic All-Big Ten honors every year, USTFCCCA All-Academic three times and Academic All-District accolades this year. The Wisconsin School of Business had another Big Ten Medal of Honor winner n recent years. In 2007 Joe Thomas—football star and real estate major—received the award.
