The Wisconsin School of Business committee of full professors voted to recommend promotion to full professor for François Ortalo-Magné in the Department of Real Estate and Urban Land Economics.
The Divisional Committee voted unanimously to recommend promotion to associate professor with tenure for Joann Peck in the Marketing Department.
Accounting Professor Larry Rittenberg was one of two academics in the nation chosen to meet with the PCAOB (Public Company Accounting Oversight Board). PCAOB sets all auditing standards for audits of public companies that file with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Among other topics, he discussed with the board how PCAOB could improve its audit standard setting process. Rittenberg is the outgoing chair of he Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO), a voluntary private sector organization dedicated to improving the quality of financial reporting through business ethics, effective internal controls, and corporate governance.
John Surdyk, director of the Initiative for Studies in Technology Entrepreneurship and the Burrill Business Plan Competition, has accepted a volunteer position with the Community Development Authority for the City of Monona. He will look at the role of entrepreneurship and the development of high-tech industry in the area. Sturdyk has authored a chapter on social responsibility and the impact of reputation on a firm’s bottom line that will appear in Bloomsbury’s “QFinance: the Ultimate Resource” in September.
Departures
Webmaster Mark Anderson left the business school in April to accept a position with American Family Insurance in its Digital Marketing Group. Anderson had worked in the Marketing Services unit of the Wisconsin School of Business for almost seven years, working to build a consistent online brand for the Wisconsin School of Business.
Arrivals
Deb Houden starts June 1 as director of the Family Business Center. She earned her bachelor’s, master’s and doctorate degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, specializing in communication, conflict resolution and perceptions of fairness during succession in family business. Active in the Family Firm Institute, she has earned her Certificate in Family Business Advising, and serves on a special task force within FFI in chapter organization. She is an active member of the Association for Conflict Resolution. Houden has lectured in numerous courses at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, including Issues in Family Business, Communication and Conflict Resolution and Introduction to Interpersonal Communication. In addition to teaching, she has consulted with family businesses for the past three years.
