Recent News Coverage of the Wisconsin School of Business

People and programs of the Wisconsin School of Business were in the news over the past month.

National

Associate Professor Francois Ortalo-Magne, Real Estate and Urban Land Economics, was quoted in the Forbes article, “Top U.S. real estate markets for investments.” Ortalo-Magné commented on how a weakening U.S. dollar impacts foreign investments in the real estate market.

Assistant Professor Morris Davis, Real Estate and Urban Land Economics, was quoted in the New Orleans Times-Picayune. In the article, “N.O. buyers could see homes gain value,” Davis commented the differences between renting and buying a home in a desirable real estate market.

Andrew Taylor, director, Bolz Center for Arts Administration, was named as one of the top 25 Most Powerful People in the Nonprofit Arts by the Western States Arts Federation blog. Taylor came in at number 11 on the list for his arts administration blog and his role as president of the Association of Arts Administration Educators.

Antonio Mello, professor, Finance, Investment and Banking, was featured in the Portuguese magazine Sábado. In the article, “Yes we can, Manuela!,” Mello discussed U.S. Presidential nominee, Barack Obama’s economic policy.

Regional

The new Grainger Hall addition was featured in several regional publications, including the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Wisbusiness.com, NBC-15 and WISC-TV. Dean Michael Knetter was also quoted.

Masako Ueda, assistant professor, Finance, was quoted in the Milwaukee Business Journal article, “Raising cash in a tough economy: Milwaukee firms file IPOs despite downturn.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel featured an editorial praising the Wisconsin School of Business for its focus on developing entrepreneurs. The article, “Growing our own,” cites several examples, including the G. Steven Burrill Business Plan contest, the Wisconsin Entrepreneurship Bootcamp, the new living-learning community in Sellery Hall and the new addition to Grainger Hall.

The 2008 U.S. News & World Report rankings were released in August. The rankings were covered in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, Capital Times, and Wisbusiness.com.

Applied Security Analysis MBA student Jason Mirr was featured in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article, “Analyst sees copper as a shining investment.” Mirr believes copper will be an increasingly important commodity and a sound investment.

Local

InBusiness Magazine published its 2008 “Forty Under Forty,” list in its September issue and featured several Wisconsin School of Business alumni, students and employees. Alisa Robertson, director, Alumni Relations; and Kavi Turnball, MBA student, Entrepreneurial Management, were featured on the cover of this year’s issue. Recent graduate Troy Vosseler, co-originator of Sky Vegetables and winner of this year’s G. Steven Burrill Technology Business Plan Competition, was featured on the list as well. Other Wisconsin School of Business alumni included Scott Daigger, Jon Hardin, Heather Hilleren, Matt Lerner, Jessica Peters-Michaud and Chad Sorenson.

Business school alumna Heather Hilleren was mentioned in the Wisconsin State Journal article “Regional booster off to great start.” The article discussed the “Badger Boomerang Project,” which seeks to lure back University of Wisconsin-Madison alumni in the health care and biotech fields who left the area after graduation. Hilleren developed a Web- based tool for online sales, inventory and bidding at Greenleafmarket.com

Bolz Center for Arts Administration Director Andrew Taylor was quoted in the Capital Times article, “American Players Theatre expansion on track.” Taylor commented on the American Players Theatre “Touchstone Campaign” to raise money for a new indoor theater and additional rehearsal space.

The Badger Herald mentioned the Wisconsin School of Business in the article, “Regents approve tuition hike at 4-year schools.” The article discussed the differential program already in place at the business school.

Charles Krueger, chair, Executive Education, was quoted in two Wisconsin State Journal articles. In the “Curiosities” section, Krueger discussed how fuel prices have an effect on airline ticket prices.
