National
The Wisconsin School of Business was mentioned in a BusinessWeek Online article on the popularity of risk management courses and program at business schools in the current financial markets. The article also quoted Christy Kaufman, a Wisconsin graduate who taught a hands-on risk management class this past academic semester.
The Wisconsin MBA was one of the schools highlighted in an article on the growing trend toward specialized MBA programs in a BusinessWeek Online article.
WomenEntrepreneur.com featured an article on Professor Anne Miner, Management and Human Resources. The article, “Acting without planning,” discussed the trend of teaching “improvisation” at business schools, a topic which Miner has researched extensively. The article was also featured on FoxNews.com
Morris Davis, assistant professor, Real Estate and Urban Land Economics, was quoted in several national blogs (finstories.com, www.howwealthworks.com ). Davis commented on how rising mortgage payments are making homes even more expensive.
Sky Vegetables, winner of this year’s G. Steven Burrill Business Plan Competition, was featured in this post on the Harvard Business Blog.
Sung Kim, associate professor, Operations and Information Management, and visiting associate professor at the National University of Singapore, was quoted in a recent book, “Habit: the 95% of Behavior Marketers Ignore” (2008, FT press). The book discusses the role of habit in consumer behavior, and highlights his paper as a pioneering work on habitual use. The paper, coauthored with Naresh Malhotra and Sri Narasimhan at Georgia Tech, was published in Information Systems Research (2005), and was one of the first to demonstrate that people go from intentional to habitual use with repeated visits to a website.
Regional
The Wisconsin School of Business was featured in an article about corporate labeling on the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus. The article appeared in the Wisconsin State Journal, Chicago Tribune and TradingMarkets.com. Senior Lecturer Thomas Eggert and Dean Michael Knetter were quoted. The article cites the Wisconsin School of Business as an example of private funding without selling the rights to its name, a rarity on most campuses, including UW-Madison.
The Wisconsin Entrepreneur Bootcamp was featured in the Wisbusiness article, “Theory meets practice in second annual Wisconsin Entrepreneur Bootcamp.” Several key alumni and industry leaders appeared at the bootcamp, including John Morgridge, G. Steven Burrill and Mark Leslie.
Local
Michael Hernke, a research fellow, was quoted in the Madison Magazine article, “The green medicine movement.” Hernke commented on how the green medicine movement is not limited strictly to hospitals.
Professor Tom O’Guinn, marketing, was quoted in the “Curiosities” section of the Wisconsin State Journal. O’Guinn explained the rationale behind pricing an item, for example gasoline, at $1.99 rather than an even $2.00. According to O’Guinn, consumers tend to pay less attention to the right-most digits in a price.
Kersi Antia, assistant professor, Marketing, was quoted in the Wisconsin State Journal article, “Madison consumers find creative ways to stretch budgets.” Antia said in an economic downturn, consumers will do anything to save money, including shopping at dollar stores and only buying the necessities.
Mark Matosian, director of the Graduate Student Services, was featured in the Wisconsin State Journal feature, “Know your Madisonian” for his 30 years of volunteering with the Badger Boys State.
Professor Stephen Malpezzi, Real Estate and Urban Land Economics, was interviewed in the WISC-TV story, “Airports weathering tough economic times.” Malpezzi commented on the local impact of Midwest Airlines’ cutting back flights from Madison.
The Wisconsin School of Business directed the second annual Wisconsin Entrepreneurship Bootcamp (WEB) for graduate students in July, which was covered by several media outlets.
