Health Products for the Base of the Economic Pyramid

Maria Muniagurria, senior lecturer of economics, UW-Madison

Finding ways to improve access to health care in developing countries is an issue of tremendous importance for governments and businesses. This research aims to understand the crucial elements in the design of products targeted to the lower socio-economic segment of the population in order to design new products for low-income individuals without health insurance. The project will focus on health micro-loans and low-cost health insurance provided by the private sector. It will involve conducting a survey in Northwest Argentina and a subsequent analysis of the results to help internationalize the undergraduate curriculum in economics and to shed light on how U.S. business can expand into this particular market segment.
