First-Year Arabic Intensive Summer Course

Moneera Al-Ghadeer, assistant professor of African languages and literature, UW-Madison

The current international crisis focused on the Middle East has stimulated a surge of interest and enrollment in Arabic language courses, yet no summer Arabic classes have been offered at UW-Madison in recent years. As an innovative approach to meeting this demand, Al-Ghadeer plans to develop a new eight-week summer course that would allow students to achieve early intermediate (beginning of second year) proficiency. It also would include a strong cultural component such as films, music and meals, and may also include a live-in dormitory environment.

This project combines work and expenses for enhancement of the student experience related to our course Business Italian (Italian 313). Activity is articulated in two phases: 1) instructor-led student field trip to small/medium-sized firms in Northern Italy during this summer’s three-week session beginning May 27, 2003, and 2) production of CD and Web materials based on videotaped interviews with management and labor, and on tours of facilities, supplemented by materials gathered in Italy. An important aspect is to draw on Madison’s twin city link with Mantova, an ideal base for all trip activities.

Wisconsin/Germany Faculty Exchange Program

Alan Dohm, Chippewa Valley Technical College

The focus of the project is to further enhance international integration in the manufacturing curricula at Chippewa Valley Technical College (CVTC). CVTC plans to send one or two representatives to Germany this spring to complete the partnership exchange. The CVTC representative(s) will explore distance education opportunities, as well as gather information on best practices within the German education and manufacturing systems.

During Rod’s visit, he will research how international business and real estate are taught in Africa and explore ways to use long distance education for inclusion in several UW-Madison School of Business courses. Ultimately, Rod will incorporate research findings into several UW-Madison School of Business Courses in the Spring of 2003: International Business 200 and Real Estate 306 (The Real Estate Process).
