China: An Emerging Economic Power in the Global Economy

Overview

This faculty development program will give participants a unique opportunity to observe China's economic, business and political development and its important role in the global economy. The program has two components: company visits and government briefings. Company visits are planned to major US multinational companies such as GM Shanghai Plant (the largest US FDI in China), Intel, Yangfeng Visteon (a major auto parts manufacturer in China), Wal-mart China as well as Chinese MNC: Baoshan Steel Company (the largest steel manufacturer in China), and Midea Group (one of the largest consumer electric appliance producers). The participants will also be exposed to other international business operations by visiting Li & Fung Limited (the leading logistic and distribution company in the world), Yantian International Container Terminal, Momo Collection (a Korean-owned manual handbag manufacture in Guangzhou), and a hi-tech incubator in Chengdu.

After two weeks of intensive visits the participants will have gained a first-hand experience of how China has transformed from a planned economy to a market-oriented economy and how it has become more competitive in the global arena. This knowledge will greatly enhance participants' future teaching and research in international business as well as their academic careers.
