Overview
Join us for one of MITA’s most popular events. This day-long workshop offers detailed, practical information that you can use as soon as you return to your office. This program is intended for companies interested in or involved in international trade. Conveniently broken into three sessions – morning, lunch and afternoon. Attend one session or all.
Importing and exporting offer great opportunities for your company’s growth. But the details involved in these operations are getting increasingly complex. Building on past programs, two experts in international trade will present a full-day program with the information you need to make the most of your international market right now.

Topics to Be Addressed
The morning session will focus on import compliance. John Goodrich, president of JD Goodrich & Associates, will analyze various aspects of U.S. customs regulations and compliance, including new regulations pertaining to 10 + 2, Lacey Act, and consumer product safety. He will also discuss proper documentation, duties, and record keeping.
The afternoon session will cover the details of exporting. Mary Lynn Murtaugh, president of Global Back Office, LLC, will share her 30+ years of experience with participants. She will discuss key export compliance requirements, documentation, and recent regulatory changes, issues and fines. Mary Lynn will also provide information about best practices, resources and tools.

Luncheon Speaker
We are excited to have UW-Madison Professor Jeremi Suri as our luncheon speaker. One year after the election of President Obama, Professor Suri will review the administration’s approach to foreign policy issues, including the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, nuclear proliferation, and climate change.

Speaker Biographies
John Goodrich is an international trade consultant and licensed customhouse broker with more than 25 years of experience in international trade. He is currently the principal in the consulting firm of JD Goodrich & Associates (JDGA), specializing in assisting clients with import/export logistics and regulatory compliance issues. Mr. Goodrich has worked with a variety of internationally focused firms in the areas of third-party logistics, import/export trading, retail, direct marketing and technology. His career includes stints with the former Dayton Hudson Corp, the steamship line SeaLand and the direct marketer Lands’ End. As an active member in the Twin Cities round table of the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals (CSCMP), he takes a strategic view of the roles of international compliance and logistics in the greater supply chain. Mr. Goodrich is a regular contributor to the online magazine International Business Training and has authored six books on import and export. He graduated cum laude from Kalamazoo College with majors in economics and German and a minor in international commerce. He did graduate work in economics and German at the University of Bonn in Germany. He is a member of Phi Beta Kappa and obtained his customhouse broker’s license in 1987.
Mary Lynn Murtaugh, president of Global Back Office, LLC has more than 30 years of international business experience in logistics, manufacturing, sales, banking and consulting. Her professional accomplishments in sales and operational management have provided her with a solid understanding of the opportunities, challenges and resources facing today’s global companies. Ms. Murtaugh founded Global Back Office in 2004 to help companies identify and manage the true risks, processes and costs of their global operations. She is also a trainer at Fox Valley Technical College (Appleton) specializing in foundations of global trade, process development, and practical application in day to day operations as well as an instructor at UW Executive Transportation Management Program. Ms. Murtaugh is a member of Council of Supply Chain Management and Milwaukee World Trade Association.
Jeremi Suri is professor of history and director of the European Union Center of Excellence at the University of Wisconsin. He is an internationally recognized expert on foreign policy, international relations, and contemporary politics. He has written three major books: Henry Kissinger and the American Century, Power and Protest, and The Global Revolutions of 1968. Professor Suri has also published articles in the Chicago Tribune, the International Herald Tribune, the Boston Globe, the Wisconsin State Journal, Wired, and many other prominent newspapers and magazines. In addition to his research, Professor Suri is a prominent teacher and public speaker. He has received major awards from the University of Wisconsin and the Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs for teaching and public service. In 2007 the Smithsonian Magazine named Professor Suri as one of America's "Top Young Innovators" in the Arts and Sciences.
