What to Wear to the Interview

Dress conservatively and professionally, avoid extremes. Remember, the first impression the recruiter gets of you goes a long way toward getting a job. Attend the Business Basics Etiquette Seminar seminar in September that includes information on professional attire and business casual apparel. A recorded version of a past seminar is avaialable online. (See See Events/Business Basics Seminar Series.) Stop in the BCC with any specific questions on interview attire.

"Professional Attire" or "Interview Attire" is typically required for first and second round interviews and is also appropriate for career fairs. It consists of a pressed suit and shirt or blouse, a tie for men and stockings for women, and shined dress shoes.

"Business Casual Attire" is sometimes specified for recruiting events, such as the career fairs, or employer information sessions. It consists of shined shoes, a pressed shirt or blouse, and pressed dress pants, khakis, or skirt.  The definition of Business Casual is evolving, and it is better to err on the more formal side.

Remember that this is your opportunity to make a first impression on your potential future employer, and dress as well as you can. More information can be found in the Interview Preparation Guide or the "Business Etiquette" DVD is available in the BCC for check out.
