Department Research

General Information

The department believes that it is vital to maintain a position of national research prominence through the conduct of research, and its presentation and publication in the highest quality outlets.

Research is part of the responsibility of every UW-Madison faculty member. To achieve its goal of national research prominence, the faculty participate in the discovery and communication of new knowledge. In addition, faculty research is necessary to ensure that students receive the vital and up-to-date instruction that will make them highly competitive in the employment market.

The strength of UW-Madison School of Business faculty in research is reflected in a recent nationwide study. School of Business research was ranked 14th in the U.S. overall. (The study was an update of a previous report published in the Academy of Management Journal.) No rankings of research at the program level exist, although individual faculty members have done well at winning research awards.

Research is difficult to assess. However, some commonly used primary indicators are available that make research assessment feasible. These indicators include scholarly books, publication of papers in quality academic journals, presentation of papers at academic and professional meetings, production of doctoral students and obtaining research funding through grants and professorships. Another indicator of faculty leadership in research is their participation on journal editorial boards.
