Research Publications

In assessing research, we stress the importance of both quality and relevance of research output, not sheer quantity. Thus, as one measure of quality, below we list papers by our faculty that have won awards. Moreover, we feel that the number of recent publications by our faculty in major outlets provides some measure of the significance of our research productivity.

Department Research Awards

Halmstad Prize - by AERF, for the best paper published in the actuarial literature in a given year.

1991 - "Stochastic life contingencies with solvency considerations" Transactions of the Society of Actuaries. (Frees)

1998  - "Annuity valuation with dependent mortality" Journal of Risk and Insurance. (Frees, Carriere and Valdez) (Valdez was a doctoral student at the time the work was done).

1999 - "Forecasting Social Security actuarial assumptions" North American Actuarial Journal. (Frees, Kung, Rosenberg, Young and Lai) (Kung and Lai were UW doctoral students at the time the work was done).

Annual Prize - awarded by the Society of Actuaries for the best paper published by the Society in a given year.

Edward A. Lew award - by the Society of Actuaries. Had three papers that shared the inaugural 1997, for the "best paper in insurance modeling." The papers selected were:

Research Award - by the International Insurance Society.

2002 - "Insurance Claims and Legal Filings: 1977-1997" Shin Award for Research Excellence (Browne and Schmit).

1997 - "International property-liability insurance consumption" Journal of Risk and Insurance. (Browne, Chung and Frees). (Chung was a doctoral student at the time the work was done).
