Research Professorships

The top business schools recruit and retain key faculty members by providing enhanced support for continued faculty development. Funds from endowed professorships and chairs enhance state support for teaching innovations and research projects.

Within our department, we have had some success in attracting the necessary funding to support key faculty. Below is a list of the current professorships that are department enjoys.

Dan Anderson - Leslie P. Schultz Professor of Risk Management and Insurance. These funds were provided in 1990 by the USLICO Corporation in honor of Chairman Leslie P. Schultz. Anderson has held this professorship since 1990.

Mark Browne - Gerald D. Stephens CPCU, Chair in Risk Management & Insurance.  This fund was established by Mr. Gerald D. Stephens (BBA 1955) to provide supplemental support to an outstanding faculty member within the Risk Management and Insurance Program at the UW-Madison School of Business.  Browne has held this professorship since 2003.

Jed Frees - Assurant Health Insurance Professor of Actuarial Science. These funds were provided in 1992 by the then Time Insurance Company in honor of their 100th anniversary and as a tribute to then President Kenneth R. Willis. In 2004, the name was changed to Assurant Health to reflect the company's new name. Frees has held this professorship since 1993.

Joan Schmit - American Family Insurance Chair of Risk Management and Insurance. These funds were provided in 1993 by the American Family Insurance. Schmit has held this professorship since 1993.
