Faculty Research Interests
Our faculty focus on two areas of research: (1) actuarial science and (2) risk management and insurance. We also maintain a strong presence in statistical methods.

Within actuarial science, our faculty have practiced or done research in almost every line of business. Professor Rosenberg currently works extensively in health care and has a joint appointment with the Medical School. Prior to returning to academia, she worked for eleven years in the life industry. Professor Frees has o done research in finance but more recently has been interested in problems motivated by health and property and casualty areas. Early in his career, Professor Frees was involved in employee benefits practice while working in industry. He has maintained his involvement in this area, primarily through his research in Social Security.

Professor Frees has also maintained a steady interest in statistical problems (his dissertation area). Professor Rosenberg also received her Ph.D. in statistics and continues to work on the intersection between these two areas.

Statistics, through empirical research, is also used extensively by our risk management and insurance faculty. Professor Browne uses empirical techniques extensively in his areas of focus, which are primarily employee benefits and legal economics. Legal economics is the main focus of Professor Schmit, who also studies corporate risk management and as well as environmental risk management. Environmental risk management currently is the main research focus of Professor Anderson, who also has a long history of research that centers on the life insurance industry.
