Frequently Asked Questions for the PhD program
Do you have a PhD program in actuarial science?
Yes, at the doctoral level, the program is joint between actuarial science and risk management and insurance. Please visit the Doctoral Program portion of our web site for more information.
What are the admission requirements for the Ph.D. degree?
Our successful applicants typically have a background in actuarial science, risk management and insurance, economics or statistics. Admission decisions are based on the applicant's undergraduate and/or postgraduate academic record, GMAT or GRE scores, work history, and their potential for a research-oriented academic career. See the Graduate Program Office's Ph.D. Admissions site for more details.
Would passing actuarial exams be an advantage to your consideration?
Yes, although individual exams are not a critical component to our evaluation process. However, we do value applicants that have completed the professional actuarial examinations (with the Fellowship designation)
How does one apply for a teaching or researching assistantship in the PhD program in your department?
All of our accepted doctoral students are provided funding to support themselves. Please visit the Graduate Program Office's Ph.D. Financial Support site for more details.
Is it possible for me to continue for PhD in this field after my successfully completing my MS?
Yes. Although the training that one receives for a master's degree prepares one for a professional career, not the research orientation of the Ph.D. degree. Thus, if your goal is a Ph.D., the master's degree in business is not the most efficient preparation.
Can I skip a master's degree and go straight to apply for a PhD?
Yes. Most business master's programs trains one for professional career whereas the Ph.D. program is a research-oriented degree. Of course, other things being equal, an applicant will be in a stronger position with a master's degree compared to an equally qualified candidate without a degree.
When is the best time of the year to apply for the Ph.D. program?
Applications to the program are generally due around January 15 for admission to the following Fall semester. Although there is some flexibility with this date, applications that are received later than this are not fully eligible for grant and tuition support programs. Please visit the Graduate Program Office's Ph.D. Applications site for more details.
