About the Department

Located in the heart of Wisconsin's capital city on the shores of beautiful Lake Mendota, the University of Wisconsin - Madison is one of the finest institutions of higher education in the world. The University, which has an enrollment of approximately 41,000 students annually, has for decades been ranked among the top universities in the United States. Within this distinguished educational institution, there is a highly esteemed program for students interested in risk management. The UW -Madison School of Business has supported an Actuarial Science, Risk Management and Insurance program since the 1930s. Additionally, its relatively small size permits individual attention, which may account for the success of alumni who include high ranking insurance executives, brokers, consultants, employee benefit specialists, and risk managers for Fortune 500 firms. Similarly, UW - Madison doctoral recipients, who teach and conduct research at universities worldwide, are well represented in the academic community.

Our department typically has about 8-10 faculty members and prides itself on the recognized high quality of teaching that takes place. The department offers majors at all levels and typically has approximately 110 undergraduate majors. In addition, there are usually about 10-15 master degree candidates, and another 5-10 individuals seeking their Ph.D. degrees.

Our department is attached to the School of Business located in Grainger Hall. This building is a state of the art educational facility with fully equipped computer labs available for student use. Located near the heart of the university, Grainger Hall has easy access to most campus facilities including student dormitories, Memorial Union, State Street, the Kohl Center, and beautiful Lake Mendota. In addition, Grainger Hall has its own student deli and enclosed patio garden for outside dining.
