School of Business faculty earned national attention, won major awards and were ranked among the best in the nation on a variety of measures over the past year.
Faculty Excellence
Publications
School of Business faculty continued to gain the respect of their peers for expanding knowledge. They were ranked 24th in the world in terms of numbers of articles published in 2004-05 in leading academic journals, such as Human Resource Management, Journal of Accounting Research, Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Finance, Journal of Marketing, Journal of Risk and Insurance, Journal of Urban Economics, Management Science and Strategic Management Journal.
Jan Heide was named to the prestigious Thomson-ISI list of Highly Cited Researchers for the strength of his research in the field of marketing. Less than one-half of one percent of all published researchers made the list.
Faculty authored books on important topics, including: "Compensation: Theory, Evidence and Strategic Implications" by Barry Gerhart, SAGE Publications; "A Primer on U.S. Housing Markets and Policy," co-authored by Steven Malpezzi, published by the Urban Institute Press for the American Real Estate and Urban Economics Association; and "Longitudinal and Panel Data," by Edward Frees, Cambridge University Press.
Leadership Positions
- Craig Thompson co-chaired the Conference on Gender, Marketing and Consumer Behavior for the Association of Consumer Research.
- Tim Riddiough was elected a founding faculty fellow of the Real Estate Research Institute, which funds applied research and works closely with the institutional investment community. He presented research findings at the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight, the regulator of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
- Larry Rittenberg was chosen to chair the high-profile national organization involved in setting financial reporting standards, the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO). He co-authored a report measuring the costs and benefits of the Sarbanes- Oxley Act of 2002 and was named one of the nation's 100 most influential people in finance by Treasury and Risk Management magazine.
- Hollis Skaife was named to the Financial Accounting Standards Committee of the American Accounting Association.
- Ramon Aldag was named dean of the prestigious Fellows Group of the Academy of Management.
- Kenneth Wathne was among a small group of scholars identified as potential leaders of the next generation of marketing academics by the Marketing Science Institute.
- Steven Malpezzi was named a Distinguished Academic Fellow of The National Association of Industrial and Office Properties.
- Anne Miner was named Distinguished Scholar of the Year by the Technology and Innovation Management Division of the Academy of Management.
Awards
- J. Paul Peter received the Churchill Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Marketing Research Special Interest Group of the American Marketing Association.
- Terry Warfield and Hollis Skaife co-authored a paper that received the Journal of International Accounting Research's Outstanding Manuscript award.
- Edward Frees was honored by the Society of Actuaries' Board of Governors for his service as editor of the North American Actuarial Journal, the flagship journal of the Society of Actuaries.
Editorial Positions
- Hollis Skaife and Karla Johnstone were named to the editorial board of The Accounting Review.
- Ella Mae Matsumura was appointed co-editor of Accounting Horizons.
- James Seward served as the editor of Financial Management.
Research Grants
- Seventeen faculty members received research grants totaling $158,000 from the UW-Madison Graduate School.
- Edward Frees was awarded a three-year, $260,000 grant from The National Science Foundation to further his studies in insurance claims modeling and school effectiveness.
PhD Production
- In fall 2004, more than 70 doctoral candidates were enrolled in the School of Business PhD program, working closely with faculty. New PhDs were hired by leading academic institutions, including MIT, Michigan, Syracuse, York University and the University of Seoul.
