Applied Learning
The Real World as Classroom
Students had the opportunity to interact with real-world issues in a variety of ways in 2003: direct involvement with businesses and other organizations via research and consulting projects, internships and scores of other applied learning opportunities.
- Entrepreneurship students worked with several local businesses to create comprehensive strategic, operating and financing plans.
- All 80 Accounting students in the Five-Year Professional Accounting Program held three-month, full-time paid internships with accounting firms.
- Risk Management students worked with Lands’ End to analyze and reduce risks associated with exposure to loss from electronic purchasing.
- Marketing Research students conducted the first-ever economic survey of Dane County in collaboration with First Business Bank and Executive Education and found that Dane County companies were optimistic about 2004, with increases predicted in revenue, profi tability and employment.
- Students in the Applied Corporate Finance program worked in teams on real-world projects to help companies, including Qualcomm, 3M and Thermo Electron, evaluate key financial decisions.
